PhD Leadership Programme
As employers consider the future, they are highlighting the importance of employees who can engage in leadership and collaborative work. A recent Linked In survey* of 4000 people rated capability in these areas as the highest priority. This has particular salience for PhD students. Data suggests that despite the high proportion of PhDs who aspire to an academic career, only a quarter will achieve this**. Most will need to be able to meet the challenges of the changing world of work.
The New Zealand Leadership Institute (NZLI) has developed a new programme to address this challenge and support doctoral students as they prepare to step outside of the academic world. 20 quality applicants were selected from across the Arts, Engineering, Science and Business faculties to receive a PhD Leadership Award, enabling their participation in the pilot programme. Selectors were impressed by the thought, reflection and passion evident in the applications for this award, and the quality and diversity of the resulting participant group.
Commencing in April 2018, participants will engage in 5 full-day workshops over a 5 month period as they work collaboratively on a wicked challenge whilst exploring and developing core leadership practices. NZLI has identified ‘Next Generation’ Leadership as a core focus for 2018 and beyond, and this is just one of a number of leadership development initiatives planned for the student community. We wish all recipients the very best as they embark on this inaugural programme.
